Fewer than half of Americans know how to support someone in a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aid gives you the skills to recognize when someone is facing mental health or substance use challenges — and the confidence to be their first source of support.
What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. It was created in 2001 by Betty Kitchener, a nurse specializing in health education, and Anthony Jorm, a mental health literacy professor. Kitchener and Jorm run Mental
Health First Aid Australia, a national non-profit health promotion charity focused on training and research. Mental Health First Aid USA adapted the program of Mental Health First Aid Australia. And now, there is a Mental Health First Aid International.

Victoria Cowart, CPM, NAAEI Faculty, is the
Vice President of Education at PetScreening and has spent more than 14 years educating within the property management industry. Prior to her role at PetScreening, she was a direct industry operator with extensive experience overseeing the management of apartment communities, manufactured housing communities, and HOAs. Cowart played a key role in launching and leading the Charleston Apartment Association later advancing to president of the South Carolina Apartment Association (SCAA) and Regional Vice President for the National Apartment Association. She has chaired four NAA committees, most recently the 2021 Legislative Committee, and was recently inducted into the SCAA Hall of Fame. A passionate advocate for industry education, Cowart is known for creating “light bulb moments” that help learners gain confidence, consistency, and clarity in their work. She holds a degree in Human Resource Management, earned her CPM designation through IREM, is a certified Fair Housing Specialist, a certified Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor, and a proud member of the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) Faculty.
