Every month, HR Answers provides programming curated and written specifically for Multifamily NW members.
Most supervisors don't wake up in the morning intending to be ineffective leaders.
Yet employees often describe frustrating experiences with managers who fail to communicate, avoid difficult conversations, micromanage, fail to set expectations, play favorites, or simply become so focused on operational demands that they unintentionally neglect the people side of leadership.
The reality is that many supervisors receive little formal training before being asked to lead others. Technical expertise may earn the promotion, but leadership requires an entirely different set of skills.
In this engaging and thought-provoking session, participants will examine common supervisory behaviors that can unintentionally damage trust, communication, accountability, and employee engagement. Through self-reflection, discussion, and practical application, supervisors will gain a better understanding of how their actions, communication style, and leadership approach impact the employee experience.
Together we will explore:
· Common behaviors and habits that contribute to ineffective supervision
· The concept of "cultural neglect" and how good leaders can unintentionally create negative employee experiences
· The role communication plays in building trust and accountability
· Practical strategies for setting expectations, providing feedback, and addressing concerns early
· How self-awareness supports stronger leadership decisions
· Techniques for motivating employees and creating a more positive workplace culture
· Tools supervisors can immediately apply back on the job
Participants will leave with greater awareness of their leadership impact, practical ideas for improvement, and specific actions they can take to become more effective supervisors.
Because employees may judge us by our intentions—but they experience us through our behaviors.
