2022 Voters Guide

Posted By: Jonathan Clay Central Oregon, Mid-Willamette Valley, Portland/SW Washington, SWV News,

The 2022 Mid-Term Election will be Tuesday, November 8th. Ballots will be delivered shortly, and Multifamily NW is excited to offer our members guidance once again for the upcoming general election. In this election the stakes are very high for our industry. Multifamily NW narrowed the Voters Guide focus to give recommendations around elections in the Oregon Legislature including various city and county races.

Candidate endorsement decisions are made by our government affairs committee, which consider a variety of factor including: Previous elections results, past voting history, ranking in the legislature, competitive race criteria, loyalty to rental housing interests, cultivating relationships with key legislators, and commitment to bringing Multifamily NW into conversations that affect our industry.

Oregon Governor Race

Oregon’s gubernatorial race is attracting national attention with three viable candidates (a Democratic nominee, a Republican nominee and an unaffiliated candidate) whose election math could likely select our next Governor with just 35% of the vote. After lengthy discussions by the Multifamily NW Board of Directors and government affairs committee, to the association has formally endorsed Christine Drazan for our next Governor.

Portland Metro Area

There is only one Portland City Council race on the November ballot. After a runoff in the May Primary, Incumbent City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty is running against Rene Gonzalez. Multifamily NW has endorsed Rene Gonzalez. For other local races in the Portland area, we support Sharon Meieran for Multnomah County Chair and for Metro Council President we support Lynn Peterson. For legislative races the Association backs current Rep. Suzanne Weber in her race to join the Senate, representing District 16. For District 20 we support Sen. Kennemer’s reelection. Rep. Janelle Bynum has our vote for House District 51 in Clackamas County, as does Nathan Sosa for House District 30. In the House, new candidates Jeff Helfrich for District 52 surrounding Mt. Hood and Brian Stout for District 31 in Columbia County could help equalize the balance of power in that chamber.

Senate District 3 is a pivotal race to achieve a better balance in the Oregon Senate. The Association supports candidate Randy Sparacino running against incumbent Sen. Jeff Golden. Kim Wallan from House District 6 is the current Deputy House Republican Leader.

East of the Cascades

In Central Oregon there are several excellent candidates to consider for elected office. We are thrilled for Multifamily NW member Erlin Taylor of Illume Property Management who is running for Bend City Council. Running for reelection in Central Oregon is Rep. Jason Kropf of District 54 and current House Republican Leader Vikki Breese Iverson of House District 55. Further East we support Rep. Greg Smith in House District 57, and in District 60 Rep. Mark Owens.
