On Monday, April 22nd the Spring 2019 Apartment Report from Multifamily NW debuted at the sold-out Apartment Report Breakfast at the Oregon Convention Center. The capacity crowd greeted our esteemed panel of speakers who highlighted the report's latest rent and vacancy figures and addressed many timely industry topics. Rudy Munzel explained unreinforced masonry (URM) challenges and the city of Portland’s proposed regulations to make URM buildings safer. Joe Hughes gave a builder’s perspective on challenges of meeting our region’s housing demands. Former Multifamily NW Board President Jeff Denson presented an overview of multifamily building classifications and a snapshot of operating those types of properties with rising personnel costs and increasing regulations. Peter Rose dived into the short-term and long-term impacts of Oregon’s new rent control with an overview of migration numbers and our industry's catch up from still being underbuilt. Lastly Jessica Greenlee joined our speaking panel and updated attendees on the recent proposals from city hall regarding applicant screening and security deposits with a vote now postponed until May 23rd 2019.
