Join us as Mel covers how fair housing laws in our industry are particularly crucial when it comes to issues like domestic violence and disparate impact. Domestic violence survivors, for example, may face discrimination or difficulties in securing housing due to their past experiences. Disparate impact, which refers to policies or practices that may appear neutral but have a disproportionately negative effect on a particular group, can also be a concern in this context. It's important for property managers and landlords to be aware of these issues and ensure that their policies and practices comply with fair housing regulations to avoid discrimination and promote equal access to housing.

Mel Keller, Fair Housing Council of Oregon 

Mel Keller is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Willamette Valley at the Fair Housing Council of Oregon. She has a master's in comparative politics from the London School of Economics and a master's in political science from the University of Oregon. Her research focused on the history of welfare policies in the United States and the role of racial discrimination in creating these policies. Prior to FHCO, Mel worked as a union organizer building campaigns around labor issues that affect graduate employees. She resides in Eugene, Oregon with her chihuahua, Apollo.
